Training for Invigilators in Exams for General Qualifications (TIE)

120 minutes - £15 per delegate (reduces if many delegates booked)

‘Training for Invigilators in Exams for General Qualifications’ is intended for training Exam Invigilators. It introduces the ‘Instructions for Conducting Examinations’ booklet in depth to explain Invigilators’ responsibilities.

Please note that this course does not cover the requirements for invigilating candidates with access arrangements, e.g. readers, scribes etc.

At the end of the training delegates will be required to pass an online assessment of their knowledge, based on the content of the course.

The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations state: ‘A training session must be held for new invigilators, with an update meeting each year for the existing invigilation team so that they are aware of any changes. Centres should make sure that invigilators know what is expected of them’. The course will enable new invigilators to understand their role and, by highlighting the changes for the current year, it will bring existing invigilators up to date.

Based on the JCQ ‘Instructions for Conducting Examinations’ (ICE) booklet the course covers:

  • JCQ regulations for invigilation in exams
  • The role of the lead invigilator
  • The role of the invigilator
  • What to do in difficult situations
  • Supervising written, on-screen and practical exams
  • Passing the JCQ inspection
  • Changes to the current regulations are highlighted

Please note that this course does not cover in detail the requirements for administering or invigilating Access Arrangements. Please click here for information about our ‘Training for Readers, Scribes, Invigilators and Other Adult Helpers’ online course.

The course tutors are Caroline Read and Brian Rogers.

Brian Rogers

Brian Rogers

Brian has extensive experience in the inspection and quality assurance of examination centres. He was formerly an Assistant Director (Communication) at the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC) and a JCQ Centre Inspector as well as an adviser and presenter for the Regional Training Agency (RTA) and various Government bodies. He continues his role as a consultant in examination management, invigilation, centre inspections and malpractice procedures. In his various roles, it has afforded him extensive experience in a range of training for new and experienced exams officers and invigilators. He has also produced a range of training materials for both invigilators and exams officers.

Since the JCQ stated that centres must ensure that all exam support staff are rigorously tested for competence and understanding of the current regulations, we have adjusted the pricing of our courses to make it affordable for every invigilator to have their own login, and thereby their own assessment.

It is therefore intended that centres purchase an email login for each invigilator. This enables each invigilator to log in and access the training, as well as complete an assessment to prove their understanding and competence, and receive a certificate.

If you want to watch the video section of the course as a group on one of the logins, that is fine, then individuals can use their own logins to complete the assessment following the training.

New for this year: All delegates now get access to the training until the end of the academic year. Once the assessment is passed, it will no longer be available, but the video training can be accessed as many times as you like.

N.B. You will need a good broadband connection to access our online courses.

The course includes an online assessment with several sections.

These sections cover the content of the course and confirm that delegates have understood and remembered what they have learned.

Delegates are required to get 100% in each section before moving on to the next section, and must complete all sections to receive a certificate demonstrating competency.

If a section is not passed, you can go back and try again as many times as you need to. We require 100% to pass because we need to be sure that those we are certificating have the understanding and competency to maintain the integrity of examinations.

Each login has one assessment, which is why every delegate needs their own login.

Training for Invigilators in Exams

  • First 10 delegates: £15 per person
  • Next 15 delegates: £12 per person
  • Subsequent delegates: £7 per person

e.g.

If you have 3 delegates, you would pay (3 x £15) = £45

If you had 12 delegates, you would pay (10 x £15) + (2 x £12) = £174

If you had 40 delegates, you would pay (10 x £15) + (15 x £12) + (15 x £7) = £435

We have now priced our courses per person rather than having an up front course price, so that you can add delegates through the year affordably.

Every time you book someone onto the course, their login will last until the end of the academic year.
